How It Happened:

Gerry James, born on October 14, 1934, in Regina, Saskatchewan, holds a remarkable legacy as a multi-sport athlete in Canada. In football, he made his mark as a running back and placekicker for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League (CFL). From 1952 to 1964, James showcased his versatility and exceptional skills, earning notable achievements like CFL’s Most Outstanding Canadian Player (1954) and securing three Grey Cup victories (1958, 1959, 1961). As a football player, James was known for his incredible speed and agility, earning him the nickname “Kid Dynamite.” He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1981.

Not limiting his athletic prowess to the football field, Gerry James also displayed his talent in hockey. James played his Junior Hockey with the legendary Toronto Marlboros from 1951 to 1955. He was a memorial cup winner with the team in 1955.  He played in the NHL from 1955 to 1960 as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In the NHL he played a total of 149 games scoring a total of 40 points with 257 penalty minutes.

Seriously, you have to be a pretty exceptional athlete to accomplish what Gerry James did in his sports career. In the 1955-56 CFL season alone he rushed for a career-high season of 1,205 yards and was named a Western CFL All-Star. He then joined the Toronto Maple Leafs for their last 51 games, including their run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Not only did James break barriers by participating in two professional leagues simultaneously, but he also achieved great success in both sports. His accomplishments, such as being the only athlete to ever play in a Grey Cup and the Stanley Cup in the same year, have solidified his place in sports history.
