The Lady Byng Trophy, often dubbed as the ‘Gentleman’s Award,’ is an annual prize awarded by the National Hockey League to the player who best exhibits sportsmanship, gentlemanly conduct and a high level of competitiveness. The award has been around since 1925 and was donated by Lady Byng herself to commemorate her husband’s service to hockey in Canada. 

Over the years, several notable personalities have won this prestigious award – from Wayne Gretzky’s four consecutive wins in the late 80s to Pavel Datsyuk’s back-to-back wins in 2009 and 2010. However, perhaps one of the most heartwarming stories that encapsulates what it means to win this trophy happened during the 1992-93 season when Pierre Turgeon took home the honor after being assaulted on ice by notorious enforcer Dale Hunter. In his acceptance speech, Turgeon stated,” I think sportsmanship is very important; hopefully, not too many people forget about it.” For players like Turgeon and many others, winning the Lady Byng serves as a reminder of why they love playing hockey beyond just winning championships or personal accolades.

The Jack Adams Award is an annual accolade presented by the National Hockey League (NHL) to recognize the head coach who has contributed the most towards his team’s success during a regular season. Named after legendary Hall of Fame Coach, Jack Adams, who coached the Detroit Red Wings for over fifteen seasons, this award honors individuals with excellent coaching skills, exceptional leadership qualities, and outstanding results in motivating their team to achieve their goals. 

The winner of the award is chosen through a voting process by members of NHL Broadcasters’ Association at the season’s end. Winning this respected prize is considered one of hockey’s most prestigious awards and highlights coaches’ contributions towards building and leading successful teams across prolific NHL seasons.

The Frank J. Selke Trophy is awarded annually to the best defensive forward in the National Hockey League (NHL). The award was first introduced in 1977 and was named after Frank J. Selke, a former general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens. The trophy is usually awarded to players who excel in the defensive aspects of the game, such as penalty kill, faceoffs, and limiting opponents’ scoring chances.

The trophy has a rich history of legendary winners such as Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr, and Sidney Crosby. Interestingly, as recently as the 2016-17 season, there was a tie between Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby for the trophy – both players had 100 points at the end of regular season play. While teams winning championships are often remembered for years to come, hoisting the Art Ross Trophy acknowledges a standout performance by one individual amongst fierce competition across all thirty-one teams in the league.

Finally, the Hart Trophy is awarded to the player determined to be the most valuable to their team during the regular season. Named after the former coach and manager of the Montreal Canadiens, Cecil Hart, the Hart Trophy has been awarded since 1924. Some of the most notable winners include Wayne Gretzky, who won the award nine times in his career, and Mario Lemieux, who won it three times. In recent years, the trophy has been won by Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
