Living the Dream
After living the pro hockey life for 20 years Patrice Bergeron bids farewell to the NHL. He has announced his retirement.
In a statement, Bergeron said, “For the last 20 years I have been able to live my dream every day. I have had the honor of playing in front of the best fans in the world wearing the Bruins uniform and representing my country at the highest levels of international play.”
A True Legend
Career Tidbits:
It all started in the 2003 entry draft when Bergeron was drafted in the second round at number 45. He ended up playing all 19 years of his career with the Boston Bruins.
He has won the Frank J. Selke trophy, awarded to the best defensive forward, a record six times including back to back wins in 2014 – 2015.
In his career, Bergeron has scored 427 goals and has a total of 1,040 points. That’s a lot! He’s also played in more games for the Bruins than almost anyone else in history. Only Johnny Bucyk and Ray Bourque have played more games than him.
A Champion on and off the Ice
Not only is Bergeron an amazing player, but he’s also a champion. He helped the Bruins win the Stanley Cup in 2011. He has also been a part of three Bruins President Cup wins including the 2022-23 season with a 65 win season. (NHL teams play an 82 game schedule), so that in itself is amazing to be a part of. He’s also won gold medals with Team Canada in the Olympics and the World Juniors. That’s pretty impressive!
A True Teammate
In his statement, Bergeron thanked all his teammates for the great memories and friendships. He said, “I have tried to learn something from each and every one of you and I always tried to be the best teammate that I could be. I will never forget your trust, the laughs, the endless memories, the ups and downs, and ultimately the long lasting friendships.”
An Unforgettable Career
Bergeron also mentioned how proud he is to have represented Canada in international competitions. He said, “There is only one other jersey that I ever wanted to wear, and that is the Canadian jersey. Representing my country at the highest level – especially winning Gold in Vancouver and Sochi are also some of my proudest moments.”
A Once-in-a-Lifetime Player
Coaches and experts have nothing but praise for Bergeron. They say he’s a complete player who can do it all. He can score goals, shut down the best players on the other teams, and be a leader on and off the ice. He’s a winner through and through!
Good Luck and best wishes to Patrice Bergeron….a true champion.
