Phil Esposito: The First NHL Player to Score More Than 70 Goals In One Season

In the annals of NHL history, few names shine as brightly as Phil Esposito’s when it comes to scoring prowess. Esposito, a towering presence on the ice, etched his name into hockey lore by becoming the first NHL player to score more than 70 goals in one season, setting a new standard for goal-scoring excellence.

Early Years:

Born on February 20, 1942, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, Esposito’s journey to NHL superstardom began with humble origins. Drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in 1963, Esposito quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with, showcasing a rare combination of size, skill, and scoring touch.

Success with the Boston Bruins:

It wasn’t until joining the Boston Bruins in 1967 that he truly began to leave his mark on the league. Along with fellow legends Bobby Orr, Ken Hodge, Wayne Cashman and Johnny Bucyk, Esposito formed the famed “Big Bad Bruins” and spearheaded one of the most dominant teams in NHL history. He won two Stanley Cups with the Bruins and managed to score over 50 goals in five different seasons.

In the 1970-1971 season, Esposito reached new heights of goal-scoring greatness. With a remarkable blend of determination and skill, he shattered records and defied expectations by lighting the lamp an astounding 76 times, becoming the first player in NHL history to surpass the 70-goal mark in a single season. In 1975 Espo was traded to the New York Rangers where he played until his retirement in 1981.

  • Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s Athlete of the year (1972)
  • Holds the record for shots on goal in a single season with 550 in 1970-71
  • Had thirteen consecutive 30+ goal seasons
  • His #7 Jersey was retired by the Bruins in 1987

Esposito’s historic achievements not only solidified his place among the game’s all-time greats but also revolutionized the way the game was played. His ability to dominate in front of the net and capitalize on scoring chances set a new standard for goal-scoring excellence and inspired generations of players to follow in his footsteps.

After retiring as a player, Esposito became an announcer and did television commentary for Ranger games before becoming the Ranger’s general manager in 1988. In 1992 he headed a franchise bid that led to the creation of the Tampa Bay Lightning where he served as the general manager until 1998. Esposito was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984.
